Egawa Toshimasa was a metalworker of the Katsura school at the end of the Edo period. Egawa Toshimasa was born in Mito in the third year of the An’ei era. He studied under Eisei Yokotani the first generation, became a disciple of Eiju Katsura and became his adoptive son and inherited the family’s leadership. He was owned by the Arima family on the Kurume domain and later changed its name to Sorin and lived to be over 80 years old.

Dragonflies were a favorite motif of the samurai, because of their refusal to retreat, and because the Japanese word for dragonfly contains the kanji for “victory” giving the insect an auspicious aspect.
