Unsigned tanto with NBTHK Hozon, attribution to the Kaifu school.

The Kaifu school made swords from the kotō era, through to the shin-shintō era. They were located in the province of Awa (present day Tokushima prefecture).

This sword is a hirazukuri tanto, likely a pre-Edo kotō piece, with longish sugata of 9 sun 2 bu (27.87cm), very shallow sori, gunome-midare hamon, nie deki, with lots of activities visible in the habuchi. Horimono of goma-bashi on one side, and sō-no-kurikara with lotus base on the other. It looks like it has some interesting activities in the hamon (looks like sunagashi and inazuma), and a lot of nie in the habuchi.. Two mekugi ana in nakago.

The blade have, as is to be expected from a kotō blade, seen quite a few polishes and can still be well enjoyed and studied as is.

Shirasaya with built-in habaki and nicely done.

This tanto was sold from Barnaby auction, Hungary, 01/27/2018.

A beautiful signed Tokubetsu papered Yoshimasa Katana in full polish. It comes with 4 x certificates. Blade is certified NBTHK Tokubetsu certificate and 3 NTHK-NPO Kantesisho authenticity certifikates for the Koshirae, Fuchi-Kashira and Tsuba

Here is a classic Edo period (Kanbun 1661-1673) curvy Katane by Yoshimasa. He was originally of the Noshu Seki Zenjo school. His common name was Tanaka Genzaburo, and he also produced in Tosa province. The bright flowing hamon shows good clean consistency, as sign of top quality work. Notice the lovely dark swirl-pattern in the jihada, knowns as chikei.

The beautiful Edo-period koshirae features battling samurai during the famous Gempei war with a tribute to their workmanship skills in form of arrow and feather depictions on the Tsuba and fuchi-kashirae.

The sword is certified NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon for the blade and three NTHK-NPO Kantesisho authenticity certifikates for the Koshirae, Fuchi-Kashira and Tsuba.
